Three Buyers Drive Gold and Silver, Each With Different Logic

Gold and silver are often treated as a single precious metals market, but their demand comes from different buyer groups. Central banks, industrial users, and investors each participate with distinct logic—and understanding these differences can help investors interpret price signals more accurately.

Market Snapshot: Three Buyer Groups

  • Central banks: Global net gold purchases reached 289 tonnes in Q2 2026, a record for the second quarter; first-half net demand totalled 345 tonnes. The National Bank of Poland added 51 tonnes, while the People’s Bank of China added 33 tonnes.
  • Industrial users: Silver industrial demand is forecast at about 650 million ounces in 2026. However, solar demand may decline about 19% to 151 million ounces as cell manufacturers reduce the amount of silver used per panel.
  • Investors: Investors participate through physical metals, ETFs, and allocation tools, with decisions shaped by portfolio needs, risk appetite, and relative value.

Data Interpretation: Different Demand Rhythms

Central bank gold buying tends to be strategic and persistent. World Gold Council survey data show that central banks have accumulated an average of 1,000 tonnes annually over the past four years, well above the prior decade’s average of 500 tonnes; 89% of respondents expect global official gold reserves to rise over the next 12 months.

Silver's industrial demand is more closely linked to manufacturing cycles. Despite the expected near-term decline in solar offtake, the silver market remains in its sixth consecutive year of structural deficit. Industrial buyers generally hold and use silver for production purposes, so their behaviour differs from that of financial investors.

Thinking Framework

1. Who is driving the price move?

A rally supported by sustained central bank purchases may reflect a longer-term signal, while one driven by short-term investment flows may be more volatile.

2. Does a silver pullback mean industrial demand is weakening?

The decline in solar silver use mainly reflects lower silver loading per cell, not necessarily weaker solar installation activity. Electronics, medical, and industrial manufacturing still provide baseline demand.

3. Should gold and silver be viewed differently?

Gold is more closely associated with reserve and defensive allocation, while silver is influenced by both industrial use and investment demand, making its price more sensitive to supply-demand changes.

Allocation Perspective

For investors focused on physical precious metals, collectible gold and silver products, and long-term portfolio allocation, consider:

  • Whether central bank buying remains persistent, reflecting long-term reserve demand;
  • How changes in silver's industrial demand structure affect medium-term supply-demand balance;
  • Whether investor allocation demand diverges from price movements;
  • The distinct roles of gold and silver in preservation, diversification, and long-term value.

The gold and silver market is not driven by a single buyer. Strategic central bank accumulation, real industrial usage, and investor allocation decisions together form the complete demand picture. Understanding "who is buying" offers more insight than watching price movements alone.

Three buyers. One market.
