The Macau Grand Prix is one of Macau’s largest annual sports and tourism events. In November 2018, the 65th Macau Grand Prix brought together more than a hundred top international drivers to compete on the famously demanding Guia Circuit. Over the four-day event, the races attracted an estimated 83,000 spectators, as Upway Global once again partnered with a renowned Macau racing driver to battle for glory on this thrilling street circuit.

First held in 1954, the Macau Grand Prix has evolved into a world?class motorsport event. The 2018 races took place from 15 to 18 November, with drivers challenged by the 6.2-kilometre Guia Circuit, one of the most technically demanding tracks in the world. Carved out of Macau’s bustling city streets, the circuit offers virtually no runoff areas and features a combination of long high-speed straights, fast corners, steep climbs and descents, and extremely tight hairpins. The result is an exceptionally intense spectacle, with racing cars thundering past spectators at high speed through the city centre.

This year’s event received strong support from the FIA and featured three FIAsanctioned World Cup races, attracting more than a hundred drivers from around the globe. From early morning on 15 November, roads around the circuit were closed, and a packed schedule of practice and qualifying sessions followed, including the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, FIA WTCR – Guia Race of Macau, FIA F3 World Cup – Macau Grand Prix, Greater Bay Area Lotus Cup, FOOD 4U Macau Touring Car Cup and SJM Macau GT Cup – FIA GT World Cup. Each session gave drivers crucial track time to familiarize themselves with the circuit, test their machinery and refine their setups.

Supported by Upway Global, six-time Macau Cup champion Macau driver Kelvin Leong piloted car No. 6 in the Macau Touring Car Cup. On the first day of competition, he placed fourth overall, and in free practice among 31 participating drivers, he recorded the third-fastest lap time in the over?1950cc class, showcasing strong pace and competitiveness.

On 17 November, the third day of the Grand Prix, the racing reached a fever pitch. At 10:25 a.m., the Macau Touring Car Cup — a 12-lap race combining the 1600cc turbo and over-1950cc classes — got underway. The race quickly descended into chaos: on lap two, car No. 7 hit the barriers at the Mandarin Oriental Bend, followed in succession by accidents involving cars No. 23 and No. 45, triggering a safety-car period as debris and oil covered parts of the circuit. Shortly afterwards, Kelvin Leong also slid into the barriers due to oil on the track and was forced to retire. Race Control displayed red, yellow, black and black-with-orange-dot flags, suspending the race for 15 minutes. With only eight minutes remaining on the clock, the race was restarted and effectively decided in a single decisive lap, concluding after seven laps. Wong Yat-Seng took victory in the over-1950cc category, while Pang Tak-Chun, last year’s runner-up, reclaimed the title in the 1600cc class.

For Upway Global, the philosophy behind high-speed racing — precision, split-second execution and pursuit of peak performance under pressure — mirrors the company’s own approach to trading. Its platform focuses on ultra-fast order execution and high-standard network security, ensuring that client trades are processed swiftly and securely. Under the spotlight of media from 23 countries and more than 200 news organisations worldwide, this collaboration at the Macau Grand Prix once again showcased Upway Global’s brand image. After experiencing the test of a world-class racing arena, the company is ready to accelerate toward its next challenge, continuing to push the limits in both technology and service.
