Gold prices recover, but physical demand moves more slowly: a market digesting elevated prices

Gold traded at around US$4,390 per ounce on 10 August, up approximately 1.08% from the previous session. The renewed price strength has attracted attention, but the latest physical-market data tell a more measured story. Gold prices and physical demand are moving at different speeds.

According to the World Gold Council, total gold demand was broadly unchanged year-on-year in Q2 2026. For the first half of the year, total demand reached 2,522 tonnes, up 2% year-on-year, while the value of demand reached a record level. Bar and coin investment moderated in Q2 after a particularly strong first quarter, but first-half physical investment remained 21% above the same period last year.

This does not point to a simple "buyers are in" or "buyers are out" story. Instead, it may suggest that physical investors are adjusting to elevated prices by becoming more selective about timing, product format and ownership arrangements.

The physical market and the quoted price can behave differently in several ways:

  • Price movements are faster. Gold can react quickly to changing expectations and market sentiment.
  • Physical purchases are more deliberate. Buyers also consider bar or coin size, purity, brand, premium, availability and delivery arrangements.
  • High prices can change buying behaviour. Some investors may reduce the size of individual purchases, wait longer between purchases or select formats designed for longer holding periods.
  • Moderating demand does not mean disappearing demand. Q2 physical investment cooled, but first-half demand still remained well above the previous year.

For individual investors, the educational takeaway is important: a rising gold price does not automatically mean that every physical product is suitable to buy immediately, while a slower quarter of demand does not necessarily invalidate gold's longer-term role.

Before purchasing physical gold, investors may wish to consider:

  1. Is the purpose short-term price exposure or long-term asset planning?
  2. Are the product's weight, purity, certification and brand clearly stated?
  3. Do the quoted terms explain premiums, spreads, storage and delivery costs?
  4. If the gold later needs to be sold, transferred or collected, is the process transparent?
  5. Does the proposed holding fit the investor's cash-flow needs, risk tolerance and overall allocation?

For providers of physical gold solutions, this environment increases the importance of transparency and education. Alongside displaying market prices, firms can help clients understand product differences, total costs, custody arrangements and delivery procedures. This allows investors to distinguish between a movement in the reference price and the practical conditions of owning physical gold.

The key question in the current market may therefore be less about whether gold can rise further, and more about how investors respond when prices are elevated and demand is moving at different speeds:

Am I chasing a price movement, or selecting a physical gold product that genuinely fits my long-term objectives?
