The value of the global gold market reached a record level in the first half of 2026, while physical demand by weight increased only moderately. This divergence highlights how elevated prices are changing the relationship between transaction value, purchase size and product selection.

According to the World Gold Council, total gold demand reached 2,522 tonnes in H1 2026, up 2% year-on-year, while its total value rose to approximately $380 billion, a record level.

Demand by weight did not increase at the same pace as market value. Q2 global bar and coin demand stood at 307.1 tonnes, around 3% lower year-on-year and significantly below the 476.8 tonnes recorded in Q1. The World Gold Council noted that Q1 followed two unusually strong quarters of bar and coin buying, while Q2 returned to more typical levels.

Jewellery demand showed greater sensitivity to elevated prices. Q2 jewellery consumption fell to 278.2 tonnes, down 17% year-on-year, while jewellery spending increased 14% to approximately $40 billion. In other words, consumers purchased less gold by weight, but the higher unit price kept total spending higher.

On 25 August, spot gold reached approximately $4,634.76 per ounce, its highest level in more than three months, before easing around 0.4%. With prices remaining elevated, investors and consumers may respond in increasingly different ways.

The data highlight several important market observations:

  • Higher transaction value does not necessarily mean higher physical volume.
    When gold prices rise, total market value can increase significantly even if the amount of gold traded changes only modestly.
  • Bars, coins and jewellery respond differently.
    Investment-oriented physical products and consumer jewellery serve different customer groups and purposes.
  • Elevated prices may change purchase behaviour.
    Some buyers may purchase smaller amounts, choose smaller product sizes or pay closer attention to premiums and total ownership costs.
  • Product terms become increasingly important.
    The practical cost and experience of owning physical gold depend not only on the reference price, but also on purity, size, certification, inventory, custody and delivery arrangements.

For providers of physical gold products, the current environment reinforces the value of transparent, data-led client communication. Alongside the gold price, clients should understand:

  1. The weight and purity of the bar or coin;
  2. Product certification and market recognition;
  3. Premiums and service charges included in the price;
  4. The difference between purchase and buyback prices;
  5. Custody, delivery and future handling arrangements;
  6. Whether the product matches the client’s ownership objective and time horizon.

For investors, a useful question is:

When the total value of the gold market reaches a record but physical demand grows only modestly, are you focused on price movement — or on the actual weight and product terms you will own?

This does not imply that elevated prices must lead to stronger or weaker market performance, and it is not a recommendation to buy or sell. A more balanced approach is to assess market data, product terms, total ownership costs and personal financial arrangements together.
